1968 Collapse of Gold Price Rigging London Gold Pool

The London Gold Pool was an effort to contain the gold price from late 1961 to early 1968, by a group of 8 central banks.

In the London Gold Pool, the United States and 7 European nation’s central bank partners agreed to collude in order to maintain the Bretton Woods System of a fixed-rate convertible currency to gold capital account system.

The aforementioned 8 conspiring central banks coordinated gold sales to balance spikes in the market price of gold as determined by the London morning gold fix, while buying physical gold supplies on price weaknesses.

To do so required rigging a gold price as close to $35 oz USD throughout those years by direct price interventions in the world’s then most important “price discovery” location, the London gold market.

Of course there was way too much currency issued at the time of the London Gold Pool operation and thus failure was an inevitablity, as France eventually decided to change course and load their ships with gold bullion reserves.

The United States ended up providing about 50% of the required gold supply for sale. In other words, basically almost all the gold with was confiscated by the US government at $20.67 oz in 1933, and only months later the US dollar was devalued by about 70% by revaluing gold to $35 oz in 1934. The general public, still remains mostly clueless about modenr money issuance nor these gold standard facts today.

Below you can see a short clip with experts from the then French President Charles de Gaulle's 1965 speech, about the US dollar's then (and still ongoing) Exhorbitant Priveledge as the dominate reserve currency of the world.

De Gaulle sent a flotilla of French naval ships to take back gold bullion from the US shortly thereafter, and the run on gold quickened pace until the 1971 Nixon shock and the full fiat conversion of the once 'good as gold' US dollar.

The original 1934 pegged price of $35 oz USD gold was way too low and deflationary compared to the world’s then outstanding currency supplies. It was only a matter of time before gold performed a mark to market of the growing monetary base.

Thus throughout the 1960s there were many runs of delivery demands for physical gold bullion, runs on the British pound’s value, and runs on the US dollar’s value as well.

France ultimately decided to withdraw from the pool. The London Gold Pool collapsed in March 1968.

The following chart shows how we are again setting up for a 3rd round loss of the US dollar to Gold's value perhaps in time, but at many fold the prices of 1934 and 1980.

As well learn about the man, John Exter, who oversaw US gold bullion outflows during the 1950s and 1960s to not merely France but many other nations who were standing for physical gold bullion delivery. See and read about Mr. Exter's life and prescient works on gold.
