Gold's Historic Run to an All-Time High in January 2026

Gold opened 2026 already near record territory, having closed out 2025 above $4,300 an ounce. From there, the metal went parabolic. A combination of escalating geopolitical tension, renewed tariff threats, a weakening US dollar, and mounting questions over the Federal Reserve's independence sent investors rushing into safe-haven bullion.

Gold tore through $4,600, then $4,900, then $5,000 in a matter of weeks, culminating in a blistering nine-day run that peaked on January 29, 2026, when the LBMA AM Gold Price Fix hit $5,501.70, and the PM Fix reached $5,405.00 — an all-time nominal high for gold. Silver and platinum set records of their own in the very same week.

The euphoria did not last. Within days of the January 29 peak, gold reversed hard, giving back several hundred dollars an ounce as the parabolic move ran out of steam. That reversal marked the start of a months-long correction that carried into early summer, with the LBMA Gold Price Fix eventually bottoming near $3,994.50 in late June — a decline of roughly 27% from the January high. Since that summer low, gold has stabilized and partially recovered, trading in the $4,300 to $4,600 range through late August and into September 2026, as central bank buying, sovereign gold repatriation moves, and ongoing debt and currency concerns have continued to support the metal.
