2015-W PCGS SP-70 First Strike 1 oz American Silver Eagle Burnished Coin

The 1 oz American Silver Eagle coin is more than just silver bullion—it’s a representation of American ideals. Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver and features the iconic Walking Liberty design, a symbol of freedom and strength.

These specific coins are burnished versions, minted at the West Point branch, and feature the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their making underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

Today, SD Bullion offers 2015-W 1 oz Burnished American Silver Eagles, purchased in the US Mint within 30 days of their official release and graded as SP-70 samples by PCGS.

The Design

The “Walking Liberty” obverse design portrays Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays, with the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak and laurel branches in one hand, and her other arm stretched.

It also features the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the word “LIBERTY,” and the year of mintage.

The reverse depicts the Heraldic Eagle with the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner engraved “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen pointed stars above the Eagle represent the original colonies.

It also displays the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” for face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

A PCGS SP-70 First Strike Coin

PCGS (Professional Coins Grading Service) is widely recognized worldwide for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

It considers “First Strike” a coin purchased from its original mint within 30 days of its official release and submitted to PCGS appraisal.

SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a hybrid between Mint State and Proof with absolutely no imperfections.
