The Design
The Silver Eagle’s obverse rescued the Walking Liberty design from the Half Dollar coin from 1917. Liberty is the feminine personification of the American nation. The moniker Walking Liberty references how she is depicted, striding forward with the sun rays in the background. One of her arms has branches of oak as a sign of abundance. The other is stretched, in a welcome sign, for those who look for new opportunities in that land. The engraved inscriptions are “LIBERTY” arching over her, “IN GOD WE TRUST” aside, and the year of mintage on the bottom rim.
The new reverse side from 2020 celebrated the 35th anniversary of the program. The Bald Eagle has been a constant motif in the previous designs. The Eagle has a more naturalized version, with open wings while perching a branch in this contemporary depiction. On the reverse, we can find the inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER.”
A PCGS MS-69 coin
PCGS stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, and an MS or Mint State coin is a coin whose shape follows the patterns of a widespread circulation coin. Grade 69 indicates that the coin has virtually no imperfections or that they are almost invisible to the naked eye.
The American Eagles
The Series debuted in 1986 with the 1 oz Gold Eagle coin; some months later, the US Mint released the 1 oz Silver Eagle as a private investment coin. Since its introduction in the bullion market, the Eagles found easy acceptance among investors and collectors, becoming the most sought-after coins worldwide.
The American Eagle Series widened its collection to include fractional gold weights, platinum coins, and even palladium. Despite not having fractional options, the one-troy-ounce Silver Eagle is also available in proof and burnished versions.
