The Design
The obverse features the Walking Liberty design, created by Adolph A. Weinman to stamp the Half-Dollar coin in 1917. In the image, Lady Liberty has the American flag draped on her shoulder, branches of oak and laurel in one arm, and as she walks towards the sun rays, she stretches her free arm in a welcome sign.
“LIBERTY” arches over the image, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” is engraved on the lower right.
The original reverse design is John Mercanti's creation, showcasing the Heraldic Eagle behind the national shield. The Eagle carries arrows and oak branches on its talons and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen stars above the Eagle represent the Thirteen Colonies.
The inscriptions encircling the image are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” followed by the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value.”
The new reverse design celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Program. Emily Damstra recreated the Eagle in a more natural portrait but preserved the same original inscriptions.
An NGC or PCGS MS-70 Coin
The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company and the PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service are internationally recognized services that use the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins and collectibles based on the item’s condition at the moment of appreciation.
For both services, an MS-Mint State coin is a business strike coin with the same format as a popular circulated coin. As 70 is the highest grade on the scale, it is attributed to a perfect coin with no visual flaw or sign of use.
