This American Eagle is the Type 2 version, meaning that it depicts the first-ever different reverse design on the coin. To commemorate the 35 year anniversary of the American Eagle series, the U.S. Mint changed the reverse design on the gold and silver coins. The old design features a depiction of a bald eagle on the famous Heraldic Eagle form, with a shield along with stripes in front of it. The new design presents a bald eagle amidst flight, embracing an oak branch in its talons.
