2020-(S) NGC MS-69 Early Releases 1 oz American Silver Eagle Emergency Production with Trolley Label - Struck At San Francisco Mint

The US Silver Eagle is one of the most popular silver coins globally. The US Mint consistently produces these coins annually, adding special Proof and Burnished editions to the collection.

In 2020, a significant moment in American coin history occurred amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge in demand for Silver Eagles led the US Mint to accelerate production and release an emergency supply to satisfy market needs.

These coins lack mint marks identifying their origins. Therefore, NGC distinguishes them by including an “S” in parentheses on their labels to identify those issued at the San Francisco Mint.

SD Bullion sells 2020-(S) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins Struck at the San Francisco Mint in an Emergency Issue. They were purchased from the US Mint within 30 days of their official release and graded by NGC as MS-69 samples.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and certified as MS-69 coins by NGC;
  • Sealed with NGC San Francisco Trolley Label and an (S) mint mark;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Issued at the San Francisco Mint;
  • Purchased within 30 days of its official release;
  • Contains 1 oz of .999 fine silver;
  • Bullion coin;
  • Holds USD 1 and legal tender status;
  • The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Lady Liberty;
  • The reverse stamps John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle.

The Design

The obverse reproduces Adolph A. Weinman’s “The Walking Liberty” design, which depicts Lady Liberty folded in the American flag, walking with oak and laurel branches in one hand as she stretches the other arm to welcome those seeking shelter in the New World.

It also contains the word “LIBERTY” on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” aside, and the year of mintage at the bottom.

The US Mint Chief Engraver, John Mercanti, designed the reverse. The Heraldic Eagle carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. The stars above the Heraldic Eagle represent the Thirteen Original Colonies.

Additional engravings such as  “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” describe the face value, weight, metal content, and purity data.

An NGC MS-69 “Early Releases” Coin

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is renowned worldwide for assessing and grading coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which scores coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

For NGC, “Early Releases” refer to coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of their official release and taken to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins are shaped as business coins. Grade 69 is attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
