The Design

It also features the word “LIBERTY” on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” aside, and the year of mintage at the bottom.

The reverse, designed by the US Mint Chief Engraver, John Mercanti, showcases the Heraldic Eagle. 

The eagle carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. The stars above the Heraldic Eagle represent the Thirteen Original Colonies.

Additional engravings such as  “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” describe the face value, weight, metal content, and purity data.
