The Design
The Walking Liberty was created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1917. It depicts Lady Liberty striding towards the sun's rays with the American flag draped over her shoulder.
She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending the other in a welcoming gesture.
The design includes the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.
The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, designed by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, holds arrows and olive branches in its talons, and carries a banner inscribed with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.
It also contains thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” indicating face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
