The Design
Adolph A. Weinman created the Walking Liberty design featured on the obverse.
In the image, Lady Liberty walks toward the sun's rays, holding oak and laurel branches in one arm and extending the other in a welcome sign. The American flag is draped on her shoulder.
It also features the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.
John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, created the Heraldic Eagle reverse design.
The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. The original colonies are represented by the thirteen stars above the Eagle’s head.
Encircling the image, read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” describing face value, weight, metal content, and purity. It also contains the “S” mint mark.
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
An NGC PF-69 Coin
The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.
According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
