Since the first release of the American Eagles Program in 1986, the US Mint has annually produced Silver Eagle coins in both bullion and proof variations each year. 

Silver Eagle Proof coins exhibit a unique mirror-like luster, which notably differs from standard bullion counterparts. These Proof Silver Eagles contain one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver, bear a face value of USD 1, and hold legal tender status.

In 2014, the US Mint issued 745,394 Proof Silver Eagles in total.

The Design

John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle, imprinted on the reverse side, is beneath thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. It carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The coin’s face value, weight, metal content, and purity surround the image, reading “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” 

Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty displays Lady Liberty with the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak, and laurel branches in one arm, and the other stretched in a welcome sign.

It also contains the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance.

An NGC PF-69 Coin

The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.

According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
