The history of 2013 1 oz Silver American Eagle coin
The American Eagle Silver coins were first struck in 1986 with the intent of depleting the Defense National Stockpile of Silver. The proof silver eagles were also released that same year, along with the gold counterpart of the program, the American Gold Eagle. The program grew rapidly in popularity and today is arguably the most successful silver bullion coin in the world.
The first proof variant of the American Silver Eagles, the reverse proof silver eagle, and the first Uncirculated (Burnished) Silver Eagles first came out in 2006 as part of the 20th anniversary set. With the exception of the years 2009 and 2010, the coins had a polished finish due to the high demand for high-quality silver bullion, similar to gold. Special and differentiated editions like reverse proofs and small-scale productions make some silver coins quite popular among buyers, such as the 2011, 2012, and 2013 reverse proofs.
The 2013 version has become quite popular, especially among collectors, with over 130 million coins sold.
The Design of the coin (1986 - 2021)
Until 2021, the design for the American Eagle silver coins didn’t change much, and they never failed to present quite traditional symbols.
With reeded edges, the front of these silver coins features the Walking Liberty design. Lady Liberty is represented with her arms outstretched by the rising sun by Adolph A. Weinman. At the bottom, it is possible to read the word “LIBERTY”, as well as the expression “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of manufacture (the mint year) right on the bottom. The reverse side features the bald eagle's coat of arms with open wings, an olive branch in the right claw, and arrows in the left claw, designed by John Mercanti.
