The 2009 Silver Eagle Design
Recognized as one of the most famous designs of American coinage history, the Silver Eagles carry beautifully displayed iconic national symbols: Lady Liberty on the obverse and the heraldic eagle on the reverse.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design
Adolph A. Weinman first designed the “Walking Liberty” in 1916. He created the pattern for the US Half Dollar. The US Mint used it for over 30 years, until 1947. The American Silver Eagle program rescued this beloved motif to become the face of their 1986 release.
The image showcases Lady Liberty in motion towards the sun. She wears the American flag on her shoulders. Her right arm is open as in a welcome sign, while she carries branches of oaks and laurels on her left arm. These are symbols of prosperity, generosity, freedom, and opportunities to those who look for shelter in this country.
The obverse contains the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. On the bottom, the year of issuance.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
The reverse is a creation of John Mercanti, sculptor, and engraver for the US Mint. He depicts the heraldic eagle with its wings spread around the national shield, carrying a banner in its beak with the saying ”E PLURIBUS UNUM''. The talons carry olive branches and arrows. Above the eagle, thirteen five-pointed stars, referencing the original Thirteen Colonies, form a triangular feature. We can read the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER. ONE DOLLAR” on the coin’s outer rim.
The 2009 Silver Eagles Mintage
In 2009, as the world still saw the widespread economic issues that started in 2008, high demand for silver bullion caused a shortage of silver blanks in the US Mint, impacting the production of both bullion and collector offerings.
The 2009 Silver Eagles Mintage
In 2009, there was a high demand for precious metals around the world, which caused a silver blank shortage for the American Mint, hence rationing. They had to limit the purchase of silver coins and their production as well.
For the first time since the beginning of the program, the US Mint produced no Proof Silver Eagles that year. The same goes for the Burnished Uncirculated version, as all available silver blanks were directed to the production of the highly sought-after bullion version of the Silver Eagles.
It caused great dissatisfaction among investors, especially collectors of annual versions, who could not complete their portfolios that year.
On the other hand, the US Mint produced 30,459,000 units of the 2009 American Silver Eagles, a record number at the time and close to 10 million more than the previous year, 2008.
