The Design

The obverse of Silver Eagles comes from the 1917 Half Dollar coin.

It features Lady Liberty walking towards the sun, folded in the American flag, and greeting the new immigrants with the oak and laurel branches she holds. The design includes the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage completes the design.

The reverse was designed by John Mercanti, who portrayed the Heraldic Eagle beneath thirteen stars, representing the original Thirteen Colonies. The Eagle carries the American Great Seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” inform face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.

According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
