The Silver American Eagle coins are one of the most sold bullion coin series among investors and collectors. Bullion investors usually appreciate them because of their high level of metal content purity: they are .999 fine silver. Added to this intrinsic value, semi-numismatic appeal makes them attractive to both investors and collectors alike.

The US mint has made these coins annually since their first release in 1986, in varied numbers and some in proof or burnished finish. The 2014 Silver Eagle Coins carry the history of the American coinage in their 28th edition. The original design remains untouched, just as the one dollar face value and the weight of 1 troy ounce of .999 pure silver.

2014 Silver Eagle Highlights:

  • 1 troy ounce of .999 pure silver;
  • Eligible for IRAs;
  • 28th edition of the American Silver Eagle series;
  • Face value of $1, backed by the Federal Government;
  • Obverse design: The Walking Liberty, by Adolph A. Weinman;
  • Reverse design: The famous Heraldic Eagle, by John M. Mercati

The 2014 Silver Eagle Design

Two sides, two creative minds. Each side of the American Silver Eagle was idealized by  different artists and contains a remarkable display of two important symbols for the American country and also for the history of coinage: The Walking Liberty and the heraldic eagle.

Silver Eagle Obverse Design

The obverse side features the Walking Liberty. Lady Liberty walks towards the sun rays, draped in the American flag. She carries branches of oak and laurel in her left arm. Her right arm remains open, in a welcome sign. The iconic image represents American generosity and pride. Adolph A. Weinman idealized it in 1916, to be printed at the US Half Dollar. And so it was, from 1916-1947. The word “Liberty”, the mint year 2014 and the motto “In God we trust” are also present.

Silver Eagle Reverse Design

The reverse design is younger. The heraldic eagle first appeared for coinage in 1972, by Robert Scot. But, it was the US Mint engraver John Mercati who signed the latest eagle design’s update, which became the reverse of the Silver Eagle series. In the image, the heraldic eagle is behind the national shield, carrying an olive branch and arrows in its talons and a banner in its beak with the words “E pluribus unum”. Above the eagle, thirteen pointed stars represent the original Thirteen Colonies. The words “United States of America”, “1 oz fine silver” and “one dollar” complete the image.

The Silver Eagles Mintage

The US Mint first released the American Silver Eagle coins in November 1986. And after that, every year this bullion coin is minted in a large number.

But the 2008 recession had a direct impact on the bullion market. Low spot prices made these coins, which are 1 oz of 99,9% fine silver, more affordable. Therefore, the demand for American Silver Eagles pushed the sales to higher levels in the following years.

2014 became a landmark for these sales. That year, the silver spot price got a record-low value and the demand for pure silver coins rose, reaching the number of 44 million coins sold. And this number does not include proof and burnished versions specially minted by the West Point Mint.
