1991-S NGC PF-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

US Proof Silver Eagles are identical to their bullion counterparts in terms of weight, metal content, face value, and design. Each coin contains 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver, carries a USD 1 face value, and is considered legal tender.

The coins showcase the iconic designs Adolph A. Weinman and John M. Mercanti created.

However, Proof Silver Eagles are distinguished by their mirror-like luster, which accents the intricate design details. Additionally, proof coins minted in San Francisco feature the “S” mint mark.

Today, SD Bullion sells 1991-S 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof coins graded by NGC as PF-69 samples.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as a PF-69 by NGC;
  • Contains 1 oz of .999 fine silver;
  • Proof coin;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Issued in the San Francisco branch and bears the “S” mint mark;
  • Hold a USD 1 denomination and legal tender status;
  • The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design;
  • The reverse stamps John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design;

The Design

The Walking Liberty design was named like that because it displays Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending her other in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.

The word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage are also featured.

The reverse, designed by the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, illustrates the majestic eagle with the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. Thirteen stars above the eagle's head represent the original colonies.

It also contains the text "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," indicating the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity, along with the "S" mint mark.

An NGC PF-69 Coin

The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.

According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
