2024-W PCGS SP-70 First Strikes 1 oz American Silver Eagle Burnished Coin

American Silver Eagle coins showcase captivating designs that reflect patriotism and national pride, adorned with famous American symbols.

The obverse side features Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty, originally seen on the 1917 Half-Dollar coin, while the reverse side displays Emily Damstra's Bald Eagle, designed to mark the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program.

These specific coins are burnished versions, minted at the West Point branch, and feature the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their making went through a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

Today, SD Bullion offers 2024-W 1 oz Burnished American Silver Eagles, taken among those available for purchase in the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release, graded as SP-70 samples, and sealed in PCGS slabs.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty, the nation's feminine symbol, walking toward the sun with an outstretched arm, the American flag draped over her shoulder, and oak branches in her arm.

The word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the “W” West Point mint mark, and the year of issuance complete the design.

The reverse was introduced in 2021 and depicts a Bald Eagle perched on a branch. Inscriptions detailing the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity surround the image, reading “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER.”

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

A PCGS SP-70 First Strikes Coin

PCGS (Professional Coins Grading Service) is widely recognized worldwide for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a perfect coin with a satiny appearance and no flaws.

PCGS considers “First Strikes” a coin purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days it was made publicly available.
