1986 PCGS PR-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin
The American Eagle Program debuted in the numismatic world in 1986 by releasing a Silver Eagle bullion coin.
US Silver Eagles contain a full troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver and showcase a patriotic design signed by the legendary Adolph A. Weinman and John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
The first release of Proof Silver Eagles happened months after the American Eagle Program’s premiere.
Proof Silver Eagles follow their bullion counterpart patterns regarding weight, metal content, purity, and design. However, they exhibit perfect aesthetics, unparalleled precision, and a mirror-like finish highlighting every little detail of the design elements.
Today, SD Bullion offers 1986 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof coins, sealed in PCGS slabs and graded as PR-69 coins.

The Design
The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, depicts the Eagle carrying the national seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. The thirteen stars on top refer to the original Thirteen Colonies.
It also contains the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” which explain face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
The obverse stamps the Walking Liberty, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, initially used on 1917 Half-Dollar Coins.
It portrays Lady Liberty folded in the American flag and holding oak and laurel branches in her arm. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance accompany the image.
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
A PCGS PR-69 Coin
The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, to appraise and grade coins.
According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
