The Design
Adolph A. Weinman designed the Walking Liberty in 1917 to be on the Half Dollar coin. When the American Eagle Program was approved, it rescued that beloved design to be on Silver Eagles obverse.
It depicts Lady Liberty walking towards the sun, carrying oak branches and welcoming new inhabitants. The American flag is draped on her shoulder. The word “LIBERTY” arches over her, the year of issuance lies on the bottom, and “IN GOD WE TRUST” is on the lower right.
The new Bald Eagle design showcases it perched on a branch with open wings. The engravings encircle the whole image and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER,” added by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The Sheldon Grading Scale
Named after its creator in 1949, the Sheldon Scale became a standard grading system for numismatic coins, used by most third-party services, like the PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service.
The scale classifies coins from 1 to 70, according to their condition and authenticity, where 70 represents the highest score.
