2023-(W) PCGS MS-70 First Day of Issue Struck at West Point Mint 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin
The US Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle Coin and its gold counterpart to the bullion market in 1986.
US Silver Eagles are the official silver bullion coins in the US, weighing 1 Troy Oz of 99.9% fine silver, legal tender status, and carrying alluring patriotic designs that highlight the country's basic values.
Typically, the bullion version of the US Silver Eagle is produced in the Philadelphia branch and carries no mint marks. However, when demand for these coins is high, the US Mint designates other branches to help boost production.
Therefore, these coins were identified by PCGS as being from the First Day of Issue with an MS-70 grade and specifically minted at the West Point Mint, even though it does not carry the characteristic “W” mint mark of the branch.

The Design
Adolph A. Weinman created the iconic Walking Liberty design in 1917 for the Half-Dollar coin. The American Eagle Program rescued this beloved design to be the obverse side of the Silver Eagles.
Lady Liberty is walking with the sun's rays in the background and the American flag draped on her shoulder. She carries oak branches and welcomes those seeking shelter in the American lands. The inscriptions read “LIBERTY,” the year of issuance, and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Weinman’s initials are engraved right below the motto.
The new reverse design for the program's 35th anniversary features the Bald Eagle perched on a branch with its open wings. The inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER,” separated by stars and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
A PCGS MS-70 Coin
The PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service—works independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins from 1 to 70, using the Sheldon Scale according to their condition.
An MS-70 coin is a business strike coin that has never been in circulation and is flawless. That is why it receives a grade of 70, the highest score on the scale.
First Day of Issue Struck at West Point Mint
