The Design

The obverse, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, comes from the 1917 Half-Dollar Coin. It showcases "The Walking Liberty," in which Lady Liberty, enveloped in the American flag, walks toward the sun's rays. 

Lady Liberty extends one arm to welcome newcomers to the New World and carries oak and laurel branches in the other. It also features the word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage.

The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the US Mint, illustrates the eagle carrying the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. The stars above the eagle represent the Thirteen Original Colonies. 

The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" denote the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
