The Design
The obverse showcases Adolph A. Weinman's 1917 design of the Walking Liberty on the Half Dollar coin. It depicts Lady Liberty stretching her arm while carrying oak and laurel branches. The American flag flies around her, and the sun rises.
The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage accompany the design.
The reverse displays an Eagle with free open wings in a perching movement. Engravings regarding the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER.” The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” completes the design.
A PCGS MS-70 “First Day of Issue” coin
Third-party services like PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) use the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, as a standard for grading coins worldwide.
For PCGS, a “First Day of Issue” coin is a sample purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.
MS means Mint State and corresponds to a coin issued in the same format as a widespread circulation sample. However, it has never been in circulation, showing no signs of wear, tear, scratching, or contact with other coins. Hence, it is graded 70.
