1878 PCGS MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin - 7 Tail Feathers Reverse of 1879
Morgan Dollars were first introduced in 1878 as the official circulating $1 silver coin. They contain .7734 troy oz of silver and feature a design by Chief Engraver George T. Morgan.
Shortly after production began, U.S. Mint Superintendent Henry Linderman identified a “slight imperfection” in the dies during the second week of minting. Traditionally, American coinage depicted bald eagles with an odd number of tail feathers. However, the original Morgan Dollar design showed eight. To correct this, the Mint quickly revised the reverse design, reducing the eagle’s tail feathers from eight to seven.
Other details from the reverse design were also noticed. Those issued in 1878 have an eagle with a flat breast and a parallel top arrow feather, which is by far the most common variety of the 1878 Morgan dollar. The reverse of 1879 features an eagle with a convex breast and a slanted top arrow feather.

A PCGS MS-63 Coin
Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) works independently of sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.
MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
