The Design
The obverse presents a youthful depiction of Lady Liberty, designed by sculptor Anthony de Francisci. The portrait symbolizes a modern, revitalized vision of American liberty during the post–World War I era. De Francisci’s wife served as the artistic model for the design, contributing to its lifelike character and unique style.
The reverse showcases a majestic eagle at rest, perched atop a rock and holding an olive branch—an emblem of peace. The word “PEACE” appears boldly beneath, reinforcing the coin’s purpose: commemorating the end of World War I and the nation’s hope for lasting global harmony.
Additional Historical Context
The US Mint held a competition with the spirit of selecting a design that would best showcase this theme of peace. The Commission of Fine Arts invited eight prominent sculptors to produce designs for the new coin. The eventual winner of the contest was 34 year old artist and sculptor Anthony de Francisci. Using his wife as a model for Lady Liberty, De Francisci set out to design a coin that would "capture the spirit of the country—its intellectual speed, vigor and vitality."
