Those issued in the San Francisco Mint bear the “S” mint mark.

The Morgan Dollar Design

The original design dates back to 1878 by George T. Morgan.

George T. Morgan’s obverse showcases Lady Liberty looking left, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also contains the motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The Bald Eagle, on the reverse, has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches on its talons, and laurels surround it. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head, while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” are on the border.

The imprinted “S” from the San Francisco branch is a discreet mark between the laurel and the face value inscription.

The Peace Dollar Design

The Peace Dollar also displays the original debuting depiction of Lady Liberty, as designed by Anthony de Francisci in 1921. It showcases Liberty’s bust wearing a radiant crown, with the engravings “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance completing the image.

The Eagle showcased in the reverse design rests on a rock, holding an olive branch, representing peace. On this side, the inscriptions read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “PEACE.”

The San Francisco mintmark on this coin appears next to the tip of the eagle’s wing and the coin’s face value.

Reverse-proof coins

As the moniker suggests, reverse-proof coins create the opposite effect of usual proof coins. They have frosted background surfaces and mirror-like design elements.
