1880-S NGC MS-68 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

Morgan Silver Dollars, minted from 1878 to 1921, are treasured for their historical significance and exquisite design. They are named after George T. Morgan, their designer.

Over the years, the US Mint crafted Morgan Silver Dollars through different branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

These coins, in particular, carry the “S” mint mark, identifying the San Francisco branch which issued them.

Today, you can acquire 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, graded and certified by NGC as MS-68 coins at SD Bullion.

The Design

The obverse designed by George T. Morgan, showcases Lady Liberty looking left and wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls, along with a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.”

The image is surrounded by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

On the reverse side, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons, and laurels surrounding it. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.

An NGC MS-68 coin

NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company. It works independently from sovereign mints, attributing grades to coins based on the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

MS means Mint State and describes a coin with a business circulation coin format. 68 is given to coins with a sharp strike, preserved original luster, few contact marks or flaws, and no visible hairlines or scuff marks.
