1879-S NGC MS-68 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin
Morgan Silver Dollars were the official dollar coin of the United States from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The US Mint issued a commemorative bullion version in 2021 to mark the centennial of the last official minting of the circulating coin.
Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, the Morgan Dollar was struck at various US Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.
These coins, in particular, carry the “S” mint mark, identifying the San Francisco branch which issued them.
Today, SD Bullion presents 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, graded and certified by NGC as MS-68 coins.

The Design
George T. Morgan designed the left bust of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls, along with a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.”
It also displays the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.
The Bald Eagle depicted on the reverse has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons, and laurels surrounding it. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design, while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head.
The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle.
An NGC MS-68 coin
NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company. It works independently from sovereign mints, attributing grades to coins based on the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
MS means Mint State and describes a coin with a business circulation coin format. 68 is given to coins with a sharp strike, preserved original luster, few contact marks or flaws, and no visible hairlines or scuff marks.
