2022 1 oz Silver Eagle Design
The US Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle coins in 1986. Ever since the coin's release, it has quickly become a favorite among precious metals investors and coin collectors alike.
For the coin's obverse, the Mint opted to revamp one of the most popular designs in American coinage history: the Walking Liberty, conceived by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 for the Half Dollar coin. The design had been discontinued in 1947 but made a glorious return to the Silver Eagle program.
With robes blowing in the wind, Lady Liberty strides forward, carrying an oak branch on her left arm, symbolizing the country's pride and strength. The rising sun is visible on the mountainous horizon in the background, signifying the land of new opportunities. Her right arm is stretched forward with the American flag wrapped around her shoulders.
On the outer rim above, we see the word "LIBERTY," and the mint year is on the bottom. On the right face of the design, we can read the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST." The bullion version does not have a mint mark.
After almost four decades of popularity in the precious metals market, the US Mint announced a new design for the reverse side in 2020. The original heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti would give way to AIP (Artist Infusion Program) artist Emily Damstra's design. According to her own review, she wanted to portray the eagle in a more natural environment, doing natural activities.
In her depiction, we can see that the majestic bald eagle clutches a large oak branch amid flight as if to add it to its nest. Surrounding the coin's outer rim are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "1 OZ. FINE SILVER", and "ONE DOLLAR." The motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM", etches above the weight of the silver coin.
Silver Eagles Mintage
All 2022 Silver American Eagles contain one troy ounce (31.103 grams) of .999 fine silver. These silver coins have a diameter of 40.6 mm (1.598 in) and come in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. The Silver American Eagle is available solely weighing 1 ounce, while the American Gold Eagle is in weights of 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, and 1/10 ounce.
The minting process of the Silver Eagle bullion coin starts with silver blanks, which the U.S Mint acquires from the private, Idaho-based Sunshine Mint. All blanks are manually tested by U.S Mint employees, along with regular laboratory assessments of weight, size, density, and purity. All Silver Eagles are examined by hand before leaving the mint or being housed in coin tubes.
The US Mint included a reeded edge variation on the 2022 1 oz silver eagle coins for enhanced anti-counterfeiting.
The American Silver Eagle Series
The United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program in 1986. It quickly grew in popularity and is a top pick for collectors and investors worldwide. At first, the program featured yearly issues of the American Eagle Silver Coin and the American Eagle Gold Coin.
In 1997, the US Mint released the American Eagle Platinum coin. It has also become an ongoing issue, while the American Eagle Palladium coin has been available for a few years since its first strike in 2017.
The Mint's high renown and respect in the bullion industry have contributed to the American Silver Eagle coin's position as the leading silver bullion coin in the world today.
Besides the bullion version, the Mint also produces two other variations of the Silver American Eagle: The Burnished Uncirculated Silver Eagles and the Proof Silver Eagles. Both have limited mintages and bear a mint mark. "W" for the West Point Mint, or "S" for the San Francisco Mint.
Why Buy The New 2022 Silver Eagle?
The Silver Eagles are the official silver bullion coins of the United States. The program is already consolidated as the most successful in the world and offers a range of variations that are sure to attract collectors.
On top of that, investing in any issues of the Silver American Eagle is investing in high-quality silver bullion. Many experts suggest that, in the unlikely event of a widespread economic collapse, having a diverse portfolio that includes precious metals such as gold and silver could be a sensible way to hedge against inflation and fiat currency devaluation. Studies have shown that precious metals have outperformed fiat currencies and even stocks.
In addition, 1 oz Silver Eagles are the best-selling silver coin in the world and carry the stamp of top-notch quality provided by the United States Mint. Because they are so sought-after by investors, these coins are highly liquid compared to other options available in the market. Plus, they could potentially obtain higher premiums if the owner decides to resell.
Finally, 2022 marks the 36th anniversary of the American Eagles Program. It is also the first time the new reverse design featured an entire year. It was introduced in mid-2021 through the 2021 Silver Eagle Type 2.
With over half a billion American Eagle silver coins sold since their introduction in 1986, this issue is set to extend the program's fruitful history to further horizons.
