The Design
Adolph A. Weinman designed the obverse to stamp the 1917 Half-Dollar Coin. It showcases "The Walking Liberty," in which Lady Liberty, enveloped in the American flag, walks toward the sun's rays.
Lady Liberty has a stretched arm in a welcome sign and carries oak and laurel branches in the other. It also contains the word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage.
John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the US Mint, illustrated the eagle carrying the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. The stars above the eagle represent the Thirteen Original Colonies.
The reverse design also features the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," which describe the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
A PCGS MS-70 First Strike Coin
PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service—works independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins from 1 to 70, using the Sheldon Scale according to their condition.
According to PCGS, “First Strike” refers to coins purchased from the US Mint within 30 days of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.
An MS-70 coin is a business strike coin that has never been in circulation and is flawless. That is why it receives a grade of 70, the highest score on the scale.
