1989-S NGC PF-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin
US Silver Eagles are the official silver bullion coin in the US. Introduced to investors and collectors in 1986 through the American Eagle program, they are now one of the top-sold silver coins in the world.
Proof Silver Coins were included in the collection a little later. Like their bullion counterpart, they contain 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver and display the famous designs signed by Adolph A. Weinman and John M. Mercanti.
However, Proof Silver Eagles exhibit a mirror-like luster, highlighting the finest design details. And those proof coins issued in the San Francisco Mint carry the “S” mint mark.
Today, 1989-S 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof coins graded by NGC as PF-69 samples are available for purchase at SD Bullion.

The Design
Adolph A. Weinman designed the Walking Liberty to be on the 1907 Half-Dollar coin.
It depicts Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays, holding oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending her other in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.
It includes the word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage.
The reverse was designed by the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti.
The eagle carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. Thirteen stars above the eagle's head represent the original colonies.
The surrounding text reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," indicating the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity, along with the "S" mint mark.
An NGC PF-69 Coin
The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.
According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
