1988-S NGC PF-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin
The American Eagle Program debuted in the numismatic market by releasing two bullion coins, a Gold and a Silver Eagle.
The US Mint broadened the collection by adding fractional coins to the Gold Eagle Series and crafting Proof versions of the Silver Eagles.
Silver Eagle Coins contain 1 troy oz of 99.9% fine silver. They are imprinted with the Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle, representing American pride and untouchable freedom. Unlike their bullion counterparts, Proof Silver Eagles exhibit a mirror-like luster highlighting the finest design details.
In 1988, The US Mint struck 557,370 Proof Silver Eagles. And those issued in the San Francisco Mint carry the “S” mint mark.

The Design
Adolph A. Weinman designed the Walking Liberty image on the obverse. It depicts Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays, holding oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending her other arm in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.
The design also includes the word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage.
John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, created the Heraldic Eagle design on the reverse.
The eagle features the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. Thirteen stars above the eagle's head represent the original colonies.
The surrounding text reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," indicating the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity, along with the "S" mint mark.
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
An NGC PF-69 Coin
The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.
According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
