1986-S NGC PF-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

The first American Silver Eagles were released in 1986. The US Mint introduced the official silver coin of the US to the numismatic world through the American Eagle Program.

US Silver Eagle Coins weigh 1 troy oz of 99.9% fine silver and hold legal tender status. Their iconic design is signed by the legendary Adolph A. Weinman and John M. Mercanti, the US Mint Chief Engraver.

Proof Silver Coins were struck a few months later. Despite featuring the same patterns as their bullion counterparts, Proof Silver Eagles exhibit a mirror-like luster highlighting the finest design details.

The premiere mintage accounted for 1,446,778 Proof Silver Eagles. And those issued in the San Francisco Mint carry the “S” mint mark.

The debuting Proof Silver Eagle is available for purchase at SD Bullion. It consists of 1986-S 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof coins graded by NGC as PF-69.

The Design

Adolph A. Weinman signs the Walking Liberty design stamped on Silver Eagles’ obverse. It depicts Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays, holding oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending her other in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.

The design also includes the word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage.

The 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, was responsible for the Heraldic Eagle reverse design.

The eagle features the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. Thirteen stars above the eagle's head represent the original colonies.

The surrounding text reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," indicating the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity, along with the "S" mint mark.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

An NGC PF-69 Coin

The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, to appraise and grade coins.

According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
