1921 NGC MS-65 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin - Original Bag Fragment

Morgan Dollars were the official U.S. one-dollar coins from 1878 to 1904. They were designed by George T. Morgan and minted by the U.S. Mint, with each coin containing 0.7734 ounces of silver. 

Production briefly resumed in 1921, and a centennial edition was issued in 2021 to commemorate this last mintage. These particular Morgan Dollars, minted in 1921, were sourced from a section of an original bag and later authenticated by the NGC.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also displays the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The design includes the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

An MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin has an overall quality above the average.
