Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars are celebrated icons in U.S. Mint history, representing an essential chapter of American coinage from the early 20th century.

The Morgan Dollar Design

The original design dates back to 1878 by George T. Morgan.

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also features the motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches on its talons, and laurels surround it. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head, while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” are on the border.

The imprinted “S” from the San Francisco branch is a discreet mark between the laurel and the face value inscription.

The Peace Dollar Design

Anthony de Francisci designed it in 1921. 

It depicts Lady Liberty wearing a radiant crown, with the engravings “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance completing the image.

The reverse showcases the Eagle resting on a rock, holding an olive branch, representing peace. On this side, the inscriptions read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “PEACE.”

The San Francisco mintmark on this coin appears next to the tip of the eagle’s wing and the coin’s face value.

A PCGS PR-70 “First Day of Issue” Coin

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) is a third-party service in the numismatic world. It appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

For PCGS, a “First Day of Issue” coin is a sample purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.

PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. Because it is a reverse-proof coin, the background surfaces are matte, contrasting with the brilliant images engraved. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
