From 1878 to 1904, the US Mint produced a significant number of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins. These coins, with a diameter of 38mm and a weight of .7734 oz of actual silver content, served as the US official circulating one-dollar coin.

As the nation turned its focus to wartime efforts and transitioned to a gold standard, many Morgan Dollars and their silver counterparts were either lost or melted down. However, in 1921, these beloved coins returned to the bullion market with minor design updates. Despite their brief resurgence, Morgan Dollars were eventually replaced by Peace Silver Dollars.

The Design

Morgan Dollars are named after their design creator, Chief Engraver George T. Morgan. 

On the obverse, Morgan designed Lady Liberty in a left-profile depiction surrounded by the year of issuance, a sequence of thirteen six-pointed stars, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle, with open wings, arrows, olive branches on its paws, and some laurels beneath it. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is above the Eagle’s head, and the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the whole image.
