The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars from 1878 to 1904 for widespread circulation as the US’ official one-dollar coins.

Morgan Dollars, which contain .7734 ounces of silver, were named after their design creator, the US Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan. 

In 1921, the US Mint briefly reintroduced the Morgan Dollar for the same purpose of popular use. At last, a special edition was released in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of its final mintage.

The Design

Lady Liberty’s portrayal, enhanced by a Phrygian cap with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY,” stamps the obverse.

It also has the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance engraved.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the design.

An NGC MS-67 coin

NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company. It works independently from sovereign mints, attributing grades to coins based on the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

MS means Mint State and describes a coin with a business circulation coin format. 67 is the grade attributed to coins with sharp strikes with full, original luster, some minor contact marks, and a single, more noticeable but not detracting mark.
