The US Mint manufactured Morgan Dollars, which circulated as the official one-dollar coins in the US from 1878 to 1904. They showcase George T. Morgan’s design, and each coin contains .7734 ounces of silver. 

In 1921, the US Mint briefly reintroduced the Morgan Dollar for the same purpose. A special edition was released in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of its final mintage.

These Morgan Dollars, in particular, were minted from 1878 to 1904. They were taken from a fragment of the original shipping bag and later appraised by the NGC.

The Design

The obverse consists of Lady Liberty’s portrayal, enhanced by a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle is depicted with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the design.

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
