1949-D Washington Quarter
Brilliantly toned, this Denver Mint issue shows no visible contact marks, even under magnification. Its satiny luster reveals vivid blues, golds, reds, oranges, and greens as it's turned in the light.
Value: The auction record is $43,475 in Legend Rare Coin Auctions.
1932-S Washington Quarter
As mentioned above, though not one of the most valuable quarters in this list and no precious metals in its composition, it is still quite expensive if you consider that it is from 1932 and not as old as the previous ones. These two have always been costly, with the 1932-S valued at around $90 even in the lowest possible grades!
Value: Auction record is $45,500 from 2020, at David Lawrence RC.
1916 Standing Liberty Quarter
This first-year-issue quarter's 1916 key date makes it one of the most sought-after quarters of the 20th century. It's also prized by collectors because it displays Lady Liberty's right breast.
Value: The record price was $48,300 in 2005 for a specimen in uncirculated condition. Furthermore, PCGS professionals evaluate this coin's worth at 75,000.
2019-P 25C American Memorial
This is a discovery coin certified by NGC as a new variety. The variety is a double die obverse error, in which the obverse design of the coin is duplicated, whether in the lettering or other elements. With time, error coins tend to appreciate in value as collectors seek them.
Value: The auction record for this coin is $50,000, which was realized in 2021, for an NGC Genuine example sold on eBay.
2019-W San Antonio Missions Quarter
Launched in 2010, the America the Beautiful Quarters Program features 56 national parks and sites, one from each U.S. state, D.C., and other territories. The coin above represents San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas. The 2019-W version is rare, with only 2 million minted. Marked with a "W," these quarters were intentionally mixed with Philadelphia and Denver coins and released into circulation to spark interest in coin collecting.
Even though not many modern coins make it to the most valuable modern quarters list, this coin has only one survivor in MS69 condition (almost perfect) and none graded higher, according to PCGS registries.
Value: The auction record for this coin is $75,000, achieved in 2021, for an NGC MS69 specimen sold on eBay.
1804 Draped Bust Quarter
As mentioned, quarters were first minted in 1796 but not again until 1804. Only 6,738 of the 1804 Draped Bust quarters were produced; experts believe there are fewer than 200 left and only about 8 in original mint condition.
Value: A 1804 Draped Bust Quarter in Uncirculated condition, more specifically MS64, is worth around $300,000 according to the PCGS Price Guide. The record, however, for a circulated condition was $80,000 in 1980 at Bowers & Ruddy.
1911 Proof Barber Quarter
is coin is considered the finest proof 1911 Barber quarter, according to PCGS professionals. PCGS reports only eight such coins in all grades. Shiny, silvery fields glow around cold, sharp devices. The contrast between them is striking and clear. Inside, a soft rose-gold hue adds warmth, fading into hints of violet and blue along the edges.
Value: The Auction Record for this coin was $102,000 at Heritage Auctions in 2022.
1932-D Washington Quarter
Now we look at the most valuable modern quarters. They were minted since 1965, when silver was removed from most circulating coins, such as dimes, quarters, and half dollars, as a way for the U.S. Mint to work around the coin shortage caused by rising silver prices.
1965 was the first year of the George Washington Quarters Series. And it is by far the rarest and the most valuable Washington Quarters.
Only two issues have mintages under one million: the 1932-D (436,800) and the 1932-S (408,000). Both are key dates in the series and have been highly sought after by coin collectors in all grades for over 60 years, making them among the most famous rare coins of the 20th century.
Value: The highest price at an auction was $143,750 in 2008, at Bowers & Merena.
1913-S Barber Quarter
This quarter saw the lowest mintage of the 20th century at only 40,000 coins. Despite the lower mintage, it's not the most valuable Barber Quarter, but it can still reach impressive figures.
Value: The auction record is from 2005 of $172,500.
1807 B-2 Draped Bust Quarter
The 1807 B-2 Draped Bust quarter had obverse and reverse dies that were not used in other quarters of the time.
Value: According to the PCGS Pricing Guide, a sample of this coin in mint state can be worth up to $750,000. The highest price, however, one of the uncirculated coins could reach was in 2023 when it was sold for $252,000 at Heritage Auctions.
1919-S Full Head Standing Liberty Quarter
Although almost 2 million of these quarters were produced in San Francisco, the date has worn off many of them, and the ones in higher grades can be worth quite a sum.
Value: An auction record was set in 2014, when a quarter graded MS67 sold for $258,500 through Heritage Auctions, but the market value still fluctuates at around 300,000 nowadays.
1927-S Full Head Standing Liberty Quarter
The 1927-S is one of the rarest of the Standing Liberty quarters due to weak strikes, and fewer were minted in San Francisco due to these issues. Only an estimated 1% of the mintage was struck well enough to show the details on Liberty's head, giving these the “full head” designations.
Value: One of the two finest remaining quarters sold at auction for $258,500.
1828 B-3 25/5/50 Error Reverse Capped Bust Quarter
This is yet another example of error quarters, except in this case, the coin was originally punched with a 50 C for a Half-Dollar on the coin's reverse. It was re-punched with the proper denomination of 25 C.
Value: This error quarter was sold at auction in 2015 for $282,000.
1818 B-8 Proof Capped Bust Quarter
A fire in 1816 at the U.S. Mint led to changes in production, with the first proof quarters arriving in 1818. There were only a few made, and only two are known to exist.
Value: One of these quarters sold at auction for $288,000 in 2019. In higher uncirculated condition (MS67), it is evaluated at 400,000 by professional coin grading service professionals at PCGS.
1844 Proof Liberty Seated Quarter
Another proof coin from the Seated Liberty series that is highly coveted in coin collections across the country. There are only 5 proof coins minted for this series, one certified coin of this proof and year by PCGS, although two others are believed to exist.
Value: This coin sold at auction for $322,000 in 2008, and its value still fluctuates around the same.
1841 Proof Liberty Seated Quarter
This is another rare proof coin, and only four were produced for this year. There are only two uncirculated conditions in the PCGS registry.
Value: One of these proofs sold at auction in 2008 for $345,000.
1840-O Seated Liberty No Drapery Quarter
The New Orleans Mint made 382,200 of these quarters before the design was changed so that extra drapery appeared on the left arm of Lady Liberty. Most of these quarters were heavily circulated, and few remain in good condition.
Value: One of these quarters in good condition sold at auction for $329,000.
1834 Proof Capped Bust Quarter
In the 1800s, proof coins were made-to-order for coin collecting, and only 10 of these proof quarters were made. The coin was supposedly part of a presentation set given in 1835 to the Sultan of Muscat by American diplomat Edmund Roberts; it eventually made its way back to the United States and, with its vibrant toning, remains in near-perfect, exceptionally well-preserved condition.
Value: One of these proofs sold in 2015 for $329,000, and nowadays it is worth at least 400,000 in uncirculated conditions.
1918/7-S Overdate Standing Liberty Quarter
In high grade, the 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter is the unequaled key date to the series, being rarer than even the famous 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter.
Circulated examples of this mint error are challenging to locate with good eye appeal and a firm date, which explains the high price.
Value: The auction record for the coin was $336,000.00 in 2020, at Heritage Auctions.
1920-D Standing Liberty Quarters
The 1920-D is an underrated Standing Liberty quarter; rare Mint State examples exist and are scarcer in Full Head than population reports suggest. Though slightly more available than major strike rarities like the 1919-D, 1920-S, or 1926-D, it remains elusive.
Typical for 1917–1924 Type Two issues, it often shows strong shield detail even when the head or date is weak, especially at the temple, where head sharpness is usually soft.
Value: The auction record stands at $372,000 for an example, sold in 2021, at Heritage Auctions.
1838 Proof Seated Liberty Quarter
The Seated Liberty quarter was first produced in 1838 and initially had no ornamental drapery on the left arm of Lady Liberty. Three samples of this coin were made as proof, but only one is known to have survived.
Value: This coin sold at auction in 2013 for $381,875 but is valued at 400,000 nowadays.
1823 3 Over 2 Capped Bust Quarter
This quarter from 1823 features the list as a re-punched date, known as an overdate. During that time, the dates were punched into the coin manually, and if the date was not appropriately struck, it would be done again. In this case, a 3 was punched over a 2.
Value: One of these coins sold at auction in 2014 for $396,562. If it ever goes out in auction again, the estimated value fluctuates at around 500,000.
1805 B-2 Draped Bust Quarter
Although relatively few coins were produced during the first two iterations of the quarter, 121,394 of the 1805 Draped Bust quarter were produced.
There were five die varieties to this beautiful coin called Browning quarters. Browning-2 is the most valuable because of its “mint frost” luster. Other quarters of this year had a satin finish.
Value: One of these B-2 quarters sold at auction in 2008 for $402,500.
1871-CC Liberty Seated Quarter
Another one from the Carson City Mint. Coins from the Carson City Mint, marked as CC, are sought after because fewer coins were struck at this mint, which is now discontinued.
1871 saw a slightly larger mintage, with 10,890 coins struck. Only three survive in mint condition.
Value: The finest example sold at auction in 2022 for $456,000.
1850 Proof Liberty Seated Quarter
Only three of these proofs were made, and one quarter remains almost flawless. Proof 1850 Quarter Dollars are scarce, with only three or four known examples.
The finest exemplar, shown above, is a beautifully toned NGC PR68 specimen from the renowned John Jay Pittman and Phil Kaufman collections.
Value: This coin sold at auction in 2008 for $460,000.
1873-CC No Arrows Liberty Seated Quarter
4,000 of these quarters were minted in Carson City in 1873, but only five were made without arrows surrounding the date on the obverse.
Value: One of these sold at auction in 2012 for $460,000, but according to the PCGS pricing guide, a sample graded at least MS66 can be worth up to $1,250,000, with a potential of being one of the most valuable quarters in this list, especially among the Seated Liberty Quarters.
1839 No Drapery Proof Seated Liberty Quarter
This unique proof coin, with a mintage of just two, is best known as part of the renowned Boyd-Pittman-Kaufman-Gardner collection. At its peak, it sold for over $500,000 during the Kaufman sale.
Value: This coin sold at auction in 2008 for $517,500.
1901-S Barber Quarter
The 1901-S Barber quarter is one of the rarest and most expensive quarters. Higher grade specimens and mint state specimens are rare, with only one exemplar of the grade MS68 in the PCGS registry.
Value: One of these quarters sold at auction in 1990 for $550,000, which was a record at the time. Even in deplorable conditions, they are still worth around 2,000.
1827/3/2 Proof Capped Bust Quarter
All 1827 Capped Bust Quarter Dollars (whether original strikes from 1827 or later restrikes) are overdates, with a visible “3” beneath the “7” in the date. The original 1827 Quarter has long been recognized as a classic rarity. Of the estimated 12 proof examples, the Cameo version shown above is the most valuable, thanks to its exceptional eye appeal.
Valeu: the auction record for the Cameo version of the coins is $705,000 for a coin graded PR66+, in 2015 at Stack's Bowers. Today, as the only known example in this condition, it is valued at around $1,000,000.
One of the original strikes sold at Heritage Auctions in 2019 for $444,000, which is estimated at $650,000.
1796 Draped Bust Quarter
The 1796 Draped Bust quarter was the first edition of the U.S. quarter and is considered rare in all grades. It would take eight years for the second release of the Draped Bust Quarter, prompting many to save the original coins, often in excellent condition. The image above displays an exceptional example, with remarkably well-preserved strike details
This long gap, combined with the coin’s historical significance as the first U.S. quarter, contributes significantly to its high value today.
Only three coins have been graded MS66, and just one is known in a higher grade, MS67, estimated at $3,000,000, certified by PCGS experts.
Value: One of these rare quarters sold at auction in 2022 for $1,740,000. Its estimated value has since risen to 2,500,000, making it the most valuable U.S. quarter on this list.

FAQs
What quarters are worth money in 2025?
Quarters minted before 1965 are made of 90% silver and are worth their silver content value. Certain quarters from 1970 and earlier that have rare errors or were produced in limited quantities can also be worth more than their face value, for example, in the 1932-D and 1932-S Washington quarters.
What are the 10 rarest state quarters?
While no state or other modern quarters are exceptionally rare or worth significant amounts of money like the coins before 1965, some with lower mintages are sought after by collectors. Here are 10 state quarters with the lowest mintages, according to the United States Mint:
-
2008-D Oklahoma state quarter
-
2004-D Wisconsin state quarter (Extra Low Leaf Errors)
-
2004-D Iowa state quarter (Extra Leaf Quarters)
-
2009-D District of Columbia quarter
-
2009-P Puerto Rico quarter
-
2009-D Guam quarter
-
2009-D American Samoa quarter
-
2009-D Virgin Islands quarter
-
2009-P Northern Mariana Islands quarter
-
2002-P Ohio state quarter
Which quarter is worth $35000?
The 1970-S Washington Quarter struck over a 1941 Canadian quarter is a rare and highly sought-after error coin sold on eBay for $35,000. Very few examples of this coin are believed to have been created when some 1941 Canadian quarters were accidentally fed into a coin press at the San Francisco Mint and struck with a 1970-S Washington Quarter die.
What letters of quarters are worth money?
Mint marks show where quarters were made: "D" for Denver, "S" for San Francisco, and "P" for Philadelphia Mint (added in 1980). Some quarters from certain mints or with errors on key dates can be more valuable due to rarity. For instance, a great example of a coin value influenced by its mint mark is the 1873-CC 25C No Arrows Seated Liberty Quarter, which can be worth more than 1,000,000 in uncirculated conditions.
Are 1965 quarters worth anything?
Yes, they do. Although 1965 was the first year the U.S. Mint switched from silver to a clad composition of 75% copper and 25% nickel over a pure copper core, these quarters are rare in uncirculated condition. They can be generally worth over $15,000 in gem quality.
What makes a quarter valuable?
If they are 90% silver quarters, like the Standing Liberty, Washington, or Barber Quarters, their value depends on rarity and condition. If they’re not considered rare (something only a professional appraisal can confirm), their worth is generally based on silver content. However, in uncirculated conditions or as rarities, they can be valued at hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Which U.S. quarters are made of silver?
The quarters from 1796 until 1964 were made out of 90 % Silver and Copper. Coin dealers refer to them as junk silver, coins whose value is mainly based on their silver composition instead of their numismatic value. However, many valuable coins exist within this range, with the 1796 Draped Bust Quarter being expensive even in poor condition due to its rarity.
How can I tell if my quarter is worth more than face value?
The best way to assess a coin's actual value is to have it professionally appraised by reputable services such as PCGS or NGC. However, a few tips can give you a general idea. For example, if the coin is dated 1964 or earlier, it might be more valuable as those coins were made of 90% Silver. Still, only a professional appraisal can reliably distinguish an authentic piece from a counterfeit.
What are the key dates to look for in U.S. quarters?
Key dates include coins minted in 1964 and earlier, as these quarters were made of 90% silver. Silver coins sell for at least their bullion value, often more, depending on coin condition. Rare coins, like the 1796 Draped Bust Quarter; coins from certain years or mints, especially those with low mintage numbers, like the 1873-CC No Arrows Liberty Seated Quarter, or mint mistakes, can be highly valuable. Additionally, quarters with mint errors, like the 1827 Capped Bust Quarter Dollars, can fetch premium prices among collectors.
Other modern quarters worth money are the New Jersey proof silver quarter from 1999, which can be worth more than $900 nowadays, and the 2009-D 25C District of Columbia Doubled Die Obverse, sold for $3,099 in 2023.
How do I get my valuable quarters appraised?
Professional coin grading services like PCGS and NGC offer comprehensive coin submission guides. PCGS provides a dedicated page outlining the types of services available, packaging, and fee details: https://www.pcgs.com/submissions. Similarly, NGC offers a step-by-step guide on the submission requirements: https://www.ngccoin.com/submit/how-to-submit/.
Where can I sell my valuable quarters?
Once you know your coin’s value, you can choose to sell it at a local coin shop, which can save you shipping and packaging costs. However, selling online, through platforms like eBay, gives you broader access to buyers and greater exposure. Auction houses are another option and can sometimes yield higher returns due to the competitive nature of bidding. Just be sure to have your coin professionally appraised before putting it up for sale.
How much is a 90% silver quarter worth today?
As of May 2025, a 90% silver quarter has a melt value of about $6 based on its silver content (6.25 grams or 0.1808 troy ounces). However, collectible value can far exceed that. These coins can be worth hundreds or even thousands in uncirculated or rare varieties. For instance, a rare Washington quarter once sold for $43,250, and an error variety, the 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter, is valued at up to $425,000 by PCGS. Value depends on both silver content and numismatic rarity.
