The Fascinating History of the Angel Coin

The Angel, or the Archangel coin originated in 1465 during the reign of Edward IV and became one of the most symbolically significant gold coins in English history.

Named for its depiction of Archangel Michael defeating a dragon, the coin represented the triumph of good over evil. It quickly became an important part of England's circulating currency, closely associated with royal ceremonies, religious symbolism, and medieval tradition.

St. Michael Archangel coins were also believed to possess protective and healing properties. During royal "touching ceremonies," English monarchs would bless the coins before they were pierced and worn around the neck as symbols of divine protection. These ceremonies were commonly linked to the treatment of scrofula, a condition historically referred to as the "king's evil."

The original Angel coin featured the Latin inscription: "PER CRUCEM TUAM SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR," which, translated into English, reads: "By thy Cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer."

This historic inscription continues to appear on modern Angel Coins from The Royal Mint, preserving a connection to the coin's medieval origins.

The Royal Mint's Legacy of Excellence

The Royal Mint is the official mint of the United Kingdom and is recognized worldwide for producing some of the most respected collectible and bullion coins.

With a history spanning more than 1,100 years, The Royal Mint combines centuries of minting tradition with modern technology to create coins known for their quality, craftsmanship, and historical significance, such as the Britannia Series.

The modern Angel Coin series continues this tradition by reintroducing one of England's most historic coin designs in beautifully crafted gold and silver editions by pairing medieval symbolism with contemporary minting techniques.

Archangel Michael Design and Symbolism

Angel Coins feature Archangel Michael defeating a dragon, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Inspired by the historic 1465 Angel, the modern interpretation was created by contemporary artist Sandra Deiana and faithfully captures the spirit of the original design.

The Reverse

The reverse depicts the winged Archangel Michael standing victorious over a dragon. Throughout Christian tradition, Michael represents courage, protection, and divine authority, while the dragon symbolizes evil and chaos.

Surrounding the design is the historic inscription: "PER CRUCEM TUAM SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR," which links the modern coin to its medieval predecessor and reinforces the religious symbolism that made the original Angel coin so distinctive.
