2025 PCGS MS-69 First Day of Issue Morgan Dollar Silver Coin

The Morgan Silver Dollar, an enduring emblem of American history and fine coinage, was introduced in 1878 and remained the nation’s standard dollar coin until 1904, with one final issuance in 1921.

A century later, in 2021, the U.S. Mint celebrated that milestone with a special commemorative release. The strong public demand revived enthusiasm for the design, leading to the regular issuance of Morgan Dollars.

These coins, in particular, were acquired from the US Mint on the first day of their official release and submitted to PCGS appraisal.

The Design

The obverse, designed by Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, and a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY." 

It is inscribed with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," thirteen stars representing the original colonies and the year of issuance. 

The reverse depicts a Bald Eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and olive branches in its talons, encircled by laurels. 

The accompanying engravings read: "IN GOD WE TRUST," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "ONE DOLLAR."

A PCGS MS-69 First Day of Issue coin

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

PCGS considers a “First Day of Issue” coin a sample purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State and describes a widespread circulation coin that has never been in circulation. Grade 69 is attributed to a coin whose original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
