The Morgan Dollar Design

Morgan Dollars, named after their designer George T. Morgan, were created in 1878. 

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat and a tiara inscribed with "LIBERTY." 

Surrounding her are the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, and the coin’s year of issue. 

The reverse side displays a Bald Eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows, and an olive branch encircled by a laurel wreath. 

Additional engravings include the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "ONE DOLLAR." Between the laurel and the face value is a subtle “S” mintmark from the San Francisco branch.

The Peace Dollar Design

Peace Dollars, designed by Anthony de Francisci in 1921, feature Lady Liberty on the obverse with a radiant crown and the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issue. 

The reverse side shows an eagle perched on a rock holding an olive branch to symbolize peace. Additional inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “PEACE.” The San Francisco mintmark is positioned near the eagle’s wingtip and the coin’s face value.

An NGC PF-70 “First Day of Issue” Coin

Like other third-party services, NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

For NGC, a “First Day of Issue” coin is a sample purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.

PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. Because it is a reverse-proof coin, the background surfaces are matte, contrasting with the brilliant images engraved. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
