From 1878 to 1904, Morgan Dollars circulated in the US as the official one-dollar coins. Designed by George T. Morgan, the US Mint produced these coins, each containing .7734 ounces of silver. 

In 1921, the US Mint introduced the Morgan Dollar for the same purpose but for a short time. Only in 2021 did the US Mint issue a special edition to commemorate the centennial of its last mintage.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance complete the artistry.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle was portrayed with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

It is accompanied by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
