The Gold Panda Coin has been around seven years longer than the silver panda coin, with the first gold panda coin being released in 1982. The mintage of the 1982 panda was very limited to just 13,532 1 oz coins. This number has steadily increased since then, with the 2020 Gold Panda having a mintage cap of 700,000 coins.
Similarly to the Silver Pandas, the Gold Panda coin was minted using 1 troy ounce of gold bullion up until 2016 when the Chinese Mint switched to the metric system of 30 grams. The panda is produced using gold that has a purity of .999, which makes it one of the only gold coins minted in that purity. Most other gold coins are minted using .9999 or .9167 purity.
The brand new design for the 2020 Panda’s reverse features a baby panda laying on its back while eating bamboo leaves. There is a bamboo branch above the panda’s head with leaves around it on the ground as well. 2019’s design featuring a mother panda holding her baby, and it seems that baby has become more independent in this 2020 design. The face value of 500 yuan is minted to the panda’s left with the coin’s specifications of “30g Au .999” are minted above its head. The face value was 100 yuan up until 2001 when it was upped to 500. This side of the coin is often thought of as the obverse, but in fact the Panda design has always been the reverse side of the design.
While the reverse changes every year, the obverse is the same as all other Chinese Gold and Silver Pandas, with the Temple of Heaven featured in the middle of the design. The temple is considered to be a wonderful example of Chinese architecture. The structure was completed in 1420, however it was not opened to the public until 1918. Surrounding the temple on the reverse is a raised edge with “2020” at the bottom and “China” minted in Chinese characters.
