The Design

The obverse design of the 1987 coin depicts a mother panda bear eating bamboo leaves with her cub. Chinese inscriptions on this side indicate the coin’s face value of 500 Yuan, its weight of “5 oz,” and its gold content, “Au.” 

The reverse side features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in Beijing's Temple of Heaven. The nation’s name, “People's Republic of China,” in Chinese characters, arches over the image, with the year of issuance, “1987,” at the bottom.

NGC calls “UCAM,” or Ultra Cameo, the Proof Coin, hence PF, produced for collection purposes with deeply mirrored fields and heavily matte design elements on both sides of the coin. The number 69 means the coin's original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
