The Design

The design of this coin is a replica of the famed $20 Double Eagle, originally designed by the master coin engraver of his time – Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The obverse shows Lady Liberty in a flowing gown, with “LIBERTY” arching over her head, holding the renowned torch that is said to signify lighting a path to freedom and liberty. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the coin’s mint year is on the right. Six-pointed stars encircle the image.

The original reverse design from 1986 features a family of bald eagles in a nest. However, in mid-2021, the U.S. Mint released a new reverse design to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the program.

Created by artist Jennie Norris, the new reverse design depicts a fully-detailed bald eagle’s head, with hooked beak, staring eyes and majestic feathers.

In both reverse designs, the inscriptions are the same. They read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “50 DOLLARS,” and “1 OZ FINE GOLD”.
