Buy 1997 American Silver Eagle Coins Online

The American Silver Eagle collection may be a sensible option for investors and collectors who want to diversify their investment portfolios with precious metals and elegant designs. These silver coins carry the intrinsic value of bullion minted in beautiful pieces of art, which also have semi-numismatic value.

The 1997 coin is the 12th edition of the Silver Eagles. It is 1 oz of .9999 fine silver and meticulously engraved details of a traditional design that has enchanted the Americans since its first release in 1986. This coin has legal tender guaranteed by the federal government and a face value of one dollar.

With fair premium prices from SD Bullion, American Silver Eagles became essential to any collection and investment portfolio.

1997 Silver Eagle Highlights:

  • 1 troy ounce of .999 pure silver;
  • 12th issue of the American Silver Eagle series;
  • Face value of $1, backed by the Federal Government;
  • Obverse design: The Walking Liberty, by Adolph A. Weinman;
  • Reverse design: The famous Heraldic Eagle, by John M. Mercati

The 1997 Silver Eagle Design

The Silver Eagle design is one of the most beloved in the history of American coinage. The iconic images represent American pride and patriotism: the Walking Liberty, originally from the half dollar coins, and the heraldic eagle.

Silver Eagle Obverse Design: The Walking Liberty

The Walking Liberty had its first appearance in the US half dollar in 1917. Adolph A. Weinman created it to be the obverse of the 50-cent piece and due to its lovely features and the symbolism it represents, the image soon became a favorite of collectors and numismatists.

In the design, Lady Liberty represents the nation. She is in movement, walking towards the sun while the American flag lays around her shoulders. With one open arm, she welcomes those looking for shelter and opportunities in the country. On her left arm, she holds branches of oak as a sign of America’s strength and pride.

On this side, we can read the words: “LIBERTY”, on the upper rim, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the mint year on the bottom of the coin.

Silver Eagle Reverse Design: The Heraldic Eagle

The heraldic eagle was the motif of the Silver Eagles reverse until 2021. When John Mercanti idealized it, he was the US Mint Chief Engraver.

The depiction showcases the eagle in a protective position, with wings open around the national shield. The eagle is carrying a banner on its beak, which says “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and its talons grasp arrows and olive branches. Above the eagle, 13 stars make a triangular format, representing the Thirteen Colonies.

This side contains words engraved all over the outer sim of the coin saying: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “1 OZ FINE SILVER - ONE DOLLAR”.

The Silver Eagle Mintage

The Silver Eagle coinage faced a decrease on its production and the 1997 edition became the third lowest mintage of the series, after 1994 and 1996. That year, the US Mint produced 4,295,004 units in the bullion version and 500,000 proof Silver Eagles coins.

The limited mintage translates to a relative rarity. You can find some certified proof 1997 Silver Eagles in perfect grades from PCGS and NGC, but the bullion versions in better conditions and higher grades are scarcer, and therefore, they tend to be more valuable.
