American Silver Eagles are one of the most famous silver coins worldwide. Popular for their iconic design, these coins attract those who love to see art and history walking together. The Walking Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle bring patriotism and elegance.
With 1 troy ounce of pure silver and 1 dollar of face value guaranteed by the US government, American Silver Eagles are also desirable for investors who want to allocate gold or silver bullion to their investment portfolios.
Bullion prices are less prone to fluctuation compared to fiat currencies in times of financial instability. In fact, specialists suggest it can even outperform fiat currencies and stocks in the long run. Because of their intrinsic value and the high metal content concentration, silver coins may be a sensible option for investment needs.

The 1998 Silver Eagle Design
The Silver Eagle design is the result of the combination of two iconic symbols, idealized for different purposes, in different moments and artists. But when connected to feature the sides of this coin, they became a perfect match and made the Silver Eagle Collection one of the most beautiful designs in the history of the US coinage.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design: The Walking Liberty
Created to be the face of the US Half Dollar, the Walking Liberty depicts the nation in a feminine motif. Adolph A. Weinman created this rendition of Lady Liberty in 1917. In the depiction, the American flag lays on her shoulder as she walks under the sun rays. She is carrying branches of oak and her arm is open as in a warm welcome. Above her, the word “LIBERTY” fills the upper rim. On this side, we can find the mint year and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design: The Heraldic Eagle
The reverse depicts the shielded heraldic eagle, a creation of the US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. The Union shield appears on the eagle's breasts while the eagle seems to protect it with wings wide open around it. The eagle also carries a banner on its beak with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. It carries branches of olive and arrows in its talons, representing America’s readiness for war, but a desire for long lasting peace.. On this side, the inscriptions engraved are: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “1 OZ FINE SILVER - ONE DOLLAR”.
The Silver Eagle Mintage
1998 was a surprising year for the Silver Eagles in the market. Silver spot prices debuted high, but during the year, it dropped. The interest on precious metals increased which led to a higher production of these coins, at least higher than the previous years. In 1998, the US Mint produced 4,847,549 units of the bullion version.
The Mint also produced Proof Silver Eagles that year, through the Philadelphia Mint at a limited number of 450,000 units, which completely sold out.
