1981 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin
The Mexican Mint first released the Gold Libertad Coin in 1981. It was a 1 Troy oz gold coin, 90% pure, imprinted with designs that pay homage to the Centennial of the National Independence.
The first edition of 1 oz Gold Libertards was limited to 596,000 units. Over the years, the Mexican Mint broadened the collection with several other size options in silver and gold, in proof, reverse-proof, and bullion versions.
Gold Libertards do not feature imprinted monetary denominations. The Bank of Mexico ensures their legal tender status based on the coin’s weight and purity, according to the current gold spot price.

The Design
The Independence of Mexico in 1821 is the inspiration for the design of Mexican Libertad Coins.
The obverse showcases the 1981 Coat of Arms of Mexico, which features the national Eagle perched on a pear cactus defeating the foreign rattlesnake, encircled by “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”
On the reverse, the Winged Victory is the feminine personification of the nation. She holds laurels and broken chains, a symbol of victory and freedom. The design also contains the inscriptions “1 ONZA ORO PURO,” describing the coin’s weight and metal content, the coin’s mintage “1981,” the “M” mintmark, and “MEXICO.”
