The Design

The obverse features a brilliant rendition of a Native American Chief wearing traditional headgear. James Earle Fraser, the designer, melded the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The inscriptions engraved on the outer rim are “LIBERTY” in front of the Chief’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” corresponding to the artist’s initials on the lower left.

The reverses display the portrayal of a majestic American Bison that resembles a Buffalo, also rendered by James Earle Fraser. The Buffalo is in an upstanding position. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arch over the buffalo, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” is near the animal’s muzzle. The coin’s information referring to weight, metal content, fineness, and face value is on the bottom rim and reads “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”
