1898-O PCGS MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

The U.S. Mint produced Morgan Dollars extensively from 1878 to 1904. These coins, weighing .7734 ounces and made of 90% pure silver, feature an iconic design by George T. Morgan.

In 1921, Morgan Dollars returned as the official U.S. dollar coin, and an anniversary strike in 2021 made them especially desirable for collectors.

Over the years, several U.S. Mint branches—including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City—manufactured Morgan Dollars. Production at the Carson City facility, however, ceased in 1893.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

Today, you can purchase 1898-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins at SD Bullion, sealed in PCGS slabs and certified as MS-63 coins.

The Design

Lady Liberty’s left-profile bust stamps the obverse. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.”

It also contains the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

The image is accompanied by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

A PCGS MS-63 Coin

PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service appraises and grades coins independently from sovereign mints. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
